Chi is a large and multifaceted concept that is deeply rooted in the Chinese culture. It applies both to the tangible, such as the body, and to the intangible aspects such as feelings. Even inanimate objects can be said to contain different qualities of chi in that they evoke certain responses in the people viewing them. The understanding of chi is usually an intuitive process that lacks the scientific, mechanical explanation. And so to give it a straight forward scientific definition is a difficult task.

Although a clear definition escapes, it is still a powerful and useful concept. In Chinese medicine chi is used to explain how the different parts relate to each other. In Chi Gong it is used for healing purposes. In martial arts such as Tai Chi Chuan it is used as a tool to connect the bodily energies.

Here we shall focus on how it can be used in Tai Chi Gong, the authentic practice of Tai Chi Chuan. Tai Chi refers to the supreme balance that emphasizes the unification of body/mind/energies. Gong indicates a deep skill. Chuan refers to something that is practiced for the purpose of self-defence.

Within martial arts chi has a quality similar to air and can be seen as carrying energy. It is that which mediates the expression of energy. One of chi's important aspects is that it is moved, or lead, by mind and intention. Most of us can experience this by giving attention to a particular body part, such as the hand. By focusing attentively with the clear intention of warming it up, it is not too difficult to raise the temperature of that hand. With some practice most are able to succeed. Having the feedback of a sensitive thermometer can be quite satisfying in this case.

In Tai Chi Gong chi is used more extensively. It is something that can be felt, enhanced and used to guide our bodily movements, strengthen our body, and used for self-defence purpose. To understand how it is done it is helpful to learn about the concept of Jin. Jin is seen as a force, something that can be felt physically and the effects of which can be seen. Jin is mediated and led by chi. And so, as chi and our ability to manipulate it increase, the force jin grows in strength and flexibility.

This leads us to one of the core teachings and practices of Tai Chi Gong. This is the teaching of the three internal unifications that make the practice possible. The way to see it is that the spirit/attention moves the mind/intention, the mind/intention moves the chi, and the chi moves the jin. Thus in learning to manipulate chi we need to integrate spirit - mind - force.

In Tai Chi Chuan one is trained to learn new patterns of reaction. For instance, when faced with outside force, the normal reaction of an untrained person is to resist. In true Tai Chi Chuan one learns different techniques focused on the spirit/attention, mind/intention and chi. We may then choose to re-direct the incoming force. But the force that is then exerted on the other person does not come from our physical resistance and muscular strength. Often it comes from the opponent's chi and has been carefully controlled and re-directed, leading to a physically felt jin force. This is what is meant by using the mind instead of the body.

Thus in Tai Chi Gongone learns how to strengthen and control chi, often for self-defence purposes. However, its core and most important practice, the one that makes it all possible involves the three internal unifications, where spirit, mind, and force are integrated in a supreme balance.

Qi Gong literally means energy exercise in English but many people don't understand how Qi Gong works with your body's energy.

Energy is not something mysterious. We experience it every day. When we wake up in the morning we either feel energetic or tired. As we continue throughout our day we also experience either states of elevated energy or depleted energy. Judging from the commercials on TV it seems many people experience low-energy in the afternoon.

Qi Gong can help you feel more energetic and less tired. Practicing in the afternoon can give your body the natural energy boost that it needs. While long-term practice of can enhance your body's overall system giving you extra energy and helping you feel more vibrant throughout the day. But how does this work?

The first way that Qi Gong helps your body's energy is that it keeps it flowing freely throughout all your vital systems. The movements of the exercises help to lead and guide the energy. Specific exercise sets have different goals but in general exercises for improving and maintaining good overall health lead and guide the energy throughout the entire body. In addition to circulating the energy throughout the entire system the movements also help to remove stagnation. So by practicing, you remove any stagnation that exists, keep the energy flowing freely, and make sure it reaches every part of the body. This is essential for maintaining the health and becoming healthier because it is this circulation that provides the nourishment that the body needs to function properly and repair itself.

Secondly, if your body is able to more efficiently circulate and use energy then you will experience an increase in your perceived energy level. When energy is flowing freely without stagnation to the entire body, your body is better able to repair itself from the normal wear and tear it experiences everyday. This means that by practicing Qi Gong your body will get healthier overtime.

These are just some general ways that Qi Gong affects your body's energy. By practicing you can enhance the way your body stores, circulates, and utilizes energy. The results you see from practicing Qi Gong can show themselves in many different ways. The best way is to practice and start experiencing the results for yourself.

It is strange to think that an ancient Chinese practice can help people who suffer from the very modern condition known as whiplash.

Whiplash describes the injury resulting from the head suddenly jerking backwards; injuring the neck and the shoulders.

It often results from a car accident and research suggests that 50 per cent of people with whiplash injuries still suffer a year after the accident.

No Win No Fee solicitors Claims Direct can help people who have suffered a whiplash injury make a personal injury claim if the accident happened through no fault of their own.

Claims Direct also helps support people throughout the rehabilitation process and ensure that they get the treatment they need.

And there is growing belief that Qi gong (pronounced che gong), a form of tai-chi, can be extremely beneficial to whiplash sufferers.

Leading GP Dr Martin Scurr, writing in the Good Health section of the Daily Mail on July 12th 2011, commented: "There is evidence to suggest that Qi gong, a form of tai-chi, produces improvement in the long term. I am frequently surprised by how many whiplash patients end up practicing this, and I sense that it can be of great value."

Jeremy Marshall certainly agrees with this statement. Jeremy, 35, has been practicing Qi gong for 13 years and teaches this healthcare system in Brighton.

I interviewed Jeremy to find out more about Qi gong and how it can help people with whiplash.

Q: Can you tell me a little about what Qi gong involves?

JM: Qi gong is all about maintaining good health or recovering from illness. Movements are performed slowly, with awareness, and by regulating the body, breath and mind. Introduce breathing movements can move you closer to the feeling of tranquillity and stillness which is the essence of Qi gong. As society has become more complex and demanding people crave good health and well-being even more – a desire which has led to a noticeable rise in the popularity of Qi gong.

Q: Do you think that Qi gong can help people with whiplash injuries?

JM: Yes, I do. I can give people very basic (and gentle) rolling-the-neck and nodding-the-head exercises which can help them relax the neck and re-align the vertebrae. Equally importantly, Qi gong can help people learn to relax and let go of the fear of hurting their neck and shoulders again. People who have suffered a whiplash injury can have a natural instinct to try and avoid moving their neck – hence the ‘funnels' which you see people wearing around their neck to limit mobility. But it can be essential to move your neck again in order to recover from injuries. Reducing stress and fear through Qi gong really can help people do this.

Q: Are there any specific breathing exercises for people with whiplash?

JM: People with whiplash injuries can benefit from breathing from the belly and the diaphragm. This is how you breathe when you sleep. When you are stressed your shoulders and neck tend to rise so you can find yourself taking shallower breaths – something which will not help the pain in these areas and will not help you combat stress. The less stress you have, the more open you will be to healing processes.

Q: Jeremy, you also practice acupuncture. How beneficial can acupuncture be to people with whiplash?

JM: Acupuncture can be very beneficial to people with neck injuries. Acupuncture needles can help release tightness in muscles and focus the immune system, which is so vital for healing, on one area. It is often a good idea for people with whiplash injuries to have acupuncture first to help repair damage and then introduce them to Qi gong – something they can practice at home to speed up the healing process even more.

A big myth about Qi Gong is that it is complicated. This just is not the case. In fact it is the complete opposite. Qi Gong is simple. If you find someone that is trying to promote it as being complicated then it is probably best to keep looking.

Qi Gong is based on nature. Ancient people observed nature. They noticed natural rhythms and patterns. These natural laws form the basis for the energy practices that we have today.

Ancient people noticed that flowing water does not get stagnant and dirty. They devised exercises that move the body and circulate the energy in the body imitating the flowing water they observed in nature. Other systems of exercise are based on the movements of different animals. A good example would be the Five Animal Frolics. Animals know how to keep themselves healthy. Just watch a cat stretch when it wakes up from a nap.

So why do some people promote Qi Gong as being complicated? I feel it is because they need to differentiate themselves- maybe from other teachers or maybe to differentiate their system from other systems. Sometimes this can be more about the business aspect of teaching and attracting students then anything else.

Some of these teachers try to impress students with theories. Now the theory can be very complicated and intricate but the practice always starts form the basics and works up. The practice is what gives the benefits. The theory is to guide you as you advance and continued practice helps you understand the theory.

Now there are systems that do have very complicated practice methods. These systems often contain forced practice methods. The more complicated and forceful the training methods means that there are more things that can go wrong with the training. This type of training needs careful guidance and supervision. Other then this type of system, many styles of Qi Gong can be easy to learn and safe to practice.

Remember, nature is simple. It is not contrived. Qi Gong should be the same.

Qi Gong translates as Energy Exercises. Qi means energy and Gong means work or exercises. So literally Qi Gong means exercises for your energy.

Qi Gong is a fairly modern term. Traditionally the exercises these types of exercises were called Nei Gong or Dao Yin. These two terms go back to ancient times. Nei Kung means Internal Exercises. Dao Yin means Leading and Guiding because the postures lead and guide the Qi or energy through the body for different purposes depending on the exercise or exercise set.

Although it is the modern term it encompasses many different exercises. There are thousands of unique styles. So in reality the term Qi Gong is not very descriptive. It is like saying "transportation." But are we talking about air, water, train, automobile, space, etc? Each type of transportation is similar in that involves moving from point A to point B but beyond that each form of transportation can be vastly different. It is the same with Qi Gong.

What Qi Gong styles have in common is that they all work with the body's energy. Beyond that they can be vastly different. There are styles that have moving exercises and there are styles that only have stationary exercises. Some styles are for general health maintenance. Some styles are for specific illnesses. Some exercises are for developing certain attributes like Iron Palm for the martial arts. But, each style works with the body's energy.

There are systems that are very ancient, having been passed down from one generation to the next. There are also modern systems that have been recently created. Many people benefit from both types. People praise the ancient Qi Gong systems as having passed the test of time and the creators of the modern systems site improvement and innovation as their motivation.

If you are just starting your practice it is important to find out about the style you are interested in. What is its history, characteristics, and goals.

If you have practiced a style of Qi Gong for a while it is important to realize that other styles might be different from your own, have different methods of practicing, different characteristics, and different goals.
