As we mentioned in previous article, Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss what exhibits stress to cause PMS.

Chinese medicine has been used over 4000 thousand years in treating women productive system disorder with proven success. Chinese herbalists believe Pre menstrual syndrome is caused by

1. Blood stagnation
Blood stagnation in the abdominal region including uterus causes menstrual pain and cramps before the period. By releasing the blood stagnation, it helps to remove the blood in the abdomen resulting in lessening the symptoms of PMS.

2. Liver qi stagnation
Liver qi is important in carbohydrate synthesis and fat and protein metabolism. Liver qi stagnation causes abnormal function in regulating the production of estrogen and other hormones produced by glands resulting in inability of liver in controlling menstrual blood leading to blood stagnation in the productive system leading to Premenstrual syndrome including irritability, breast tenderness and menstrual pain and cramps before period.

3. Kidney deficiency
Chinese herbalists believe PMS is also caused by:

a) Deficiency of yang qi
Deficiency of yang in the kidney leading to over production of bad estrogen and kidney abnormal function in regulating urinary secretion resulting in back pain, water retention, tiredness and fatigue.

b) Deficiency of yin
Yin qi deficiency normally happens to women in peri menopause. It may happens to women with PMS with symptoms of night sweats and other symptoms of menopause as resulting of low levels of estrogen being produced before period.

4. Spleen qi stagnation
Sleen is an organ whose functions is in the destruction of redundant red blood cells and production of blood. Spleen qi stagnation causes abnormal function in regulating the red blood cells in blood stream leading to blood stagnation just before period resulting in PMS. Symptoms of spleen qi stagnation include weight gain or lost, eating disorder or lost of appetite.

Since PMS is treatable and manageable by natural remedies and a self help course, if you have PMS, please look on the bright side.

Frankincense and myrrh are two herbs mentioned repeatedly in the bible.  I find it fascinating that Egyptians used myrrh for embalming the bodies of Pharaohs while frankincense was used in India as incense for worship during biblical times. These shrubs, or small trees, of the family Burseraceae produce a liquid when the bark is punctured.  That liquid or resin is then dried and cooked with vinegar or honey for medicinal uses in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). While both trees originated in the Arabian peninsula, we know they arrived in China by 400 AD, where the exploration of their medicinal properties was noted.

What's incredible is that the resin from both of these trees is used in TCM combinations or herb formulas mainly to unblock the flow of blood, treat traumatic injury and stop pain. They are excellent for abdominal pain during menstruation and for irregular menstruation .  These herbal resins can also be used in combination to help treat amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation). Furthermore, both can be used externally.  Frankincense is known to ease the tendons and muscles while myrrh is used for non-healing sores such as bed sores.

Boswellic acid is the active substance of frankincense from which several dietary supplements are produced.  Researchers have identified Boswellic acid as a potent anti-inflammatory agent . This acid inhibits the 5-LOX (lipoxygenase) system, which is involved with enzymatic pathways that produce leukotrienes and thrombaxanes (inflammatory molecules) from fatty acids (following all this?).  Drugs that inhibit this pathway are normally used to treat arthritis, asthma and ulcerative colitis.  Boswellic acid, unlike conventional NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen, the accepted treatments for pain and inflammation, does not seem to cause stomach irritation in small doses.  Neither does it cause liver damage like acetaminophen. The anti-inflammatory properties of Boswellic acid are also effective in reducing the aching and stiffness associated with back pain.

Guggulsterone is the active substance within the myrrh resin. After many years of research, guggulsterone, also known as Guggul, has become popular in the United States for its cholesterol-lowering properties. (1) By inhibiting the FXR gene in the nucleus of liver cells, this leads to the more efficient excretion of cholesterol in the liver, thus lowering serum cholesterol levels. Amazing what comes from a scrubby desert tree.

Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes frankincense and myrrh as blood regulating herbs that complement each other. They invigorate the blood, dispel blood stasis and reduce swelling, relieve pain and promote healing. It is more than coincidence that myrrh is commonly used in TCM for menstrual irregularities and Western medicine research  substantiates guggul's ability to improve liver functions.  TCM theory emphasizes the importance of liver blood for regular and healthy menstrual function and recognizes stagnate liver blood as a cause of painful periods.

Given the compelling scientific evidence regarding the chemicals in these two herbal resins and the history of frankincense and myrrh, we can be certain of their potent medicinal properties. It certainly is amazing that nature has given us such powerful medicines for menstrual cramps, arthritis, cholesterol and for pain. Nature sure has had a remarkable way of providing for our needs, today and in ancient times.

Meditation CAN Be for Everyone!
by Connie H. Deutsch

There are probably as many ways to get into a meditative state as there are leaves on a tamarind tree. There are also almost as many theories about when, where, and how a person should meditate. Although the classical teachers of meditation would unarguably classify this as heresy, I think that for each of us, it probably comes down to a personal preference.

How often have you heard different variations of the same theme: that if you want to reach the plane of God-consciousness, you have to meditate at 3:00 A.M. or when the fingers of dawn stretch across the sky? It makes one question whether the experts can possibly mean that the people who work the night shift and don't get home until nine or ten o'clock in the morning are not spiritual and are doomed to never being able to be at One with God. There are many who would have you believe that this is so, or they would find day jobs.

Meditation is a very personal thing for most people. Some prefer to follow the breath while others choose to chant Aum and merge with the sound. Still, there are others who get into meditation more easily by clearing their head of all thoughts and entering that quiet space where they can feel God's presence. They may use a technique of visualizing a simple object, like a plain teaspoon, keeping it firmly in their mind's eye, seeing nothing else and thinking nothing else, until they merge with that God presence.

It is essential to remember that because we are in human form, we have our good days and our bad days, and on our good days, our meditation will transcend us to the ultimate level, and on our bad days, we will be too preoccupied or too fidgety to get into a deep meditation. On the days when your mind is too distracted to meditate effectively, get up and do something else for awhile. Then try again. Give yourself three attempts. If, on the third attempt, you are still struggling to quiet your mind, tell yourself that tomorrow is another day and give yourself permission to call it quits for today.

We often hear that spiritual people have to meditate at certain hours or that meditation can only be done a certain way, but that's not true. There are many people who meditate at the prescribed times and who do moonlight meditations and special holiday meditations, but who don't live spiritual lives. As long as you are meditating for yourself and not for an audience, it doesn't matter when you meditate or where you meditate, the results will be the same: a communion with the God within. I truly doubt if God cares whether you meditate at three in the morning or at nine in the evening, as long as your motivation is to seek Him out.

There is another aspect of meditation that is too often overlooked, and that is the one of using meditation for relaxation or to change sleeping patterns, or to get an extra surge of energy. Insomniacs have been known to get a good night's sleep by meditating right before going to bed. They have also found that if they get tired during the day, a quickie meditation of fifteen or twenty minutes, will restore their energy for another six or eight hours.

During moments of stress when nothing is going right, you can change your vibration with a fifteen or twenty minute meditation, and that will change the outcome of your day. But be aware, that if three negative things happen to you within the same day, it is probably not the fault of other people; more likely, the fault is within you. That's when you should stop whatever you are doing and take time out to meditate for fifteen or twenty minutes. It will change how you affect other people and their reactions to you.

I think meditation can be for everyone. It affects your health, your mind, your attitude, your interpersonal relationships, your productivity, and your life. Don't worry about whether it will make you spiritual; if you are living according to the precepts of the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you and also the converse: Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you, then meditation will help you attain God-consciousness. If you are not living that kind of life, then all the meditation, all the books, lectures, and seminars in the world will not move you to that level.

Meditation should be seen as a reward, not a discipline or a chore. It is a time of healing the human spirit and infusing a person with courage to get through the day; it is also the balancing of energies within the body, bringing mind, body, and spirit into perfect alignment, and it should not be confused with prayer. Prayer is when you speak to God; meditation is when you are still enough to hear God speak to you. If you haven't yet experienced the joys of meditating, start now. Find your own rhythm, choose a time of day or night that works for you and don't be afraid to vary it. Use it to propel you to another level of spirituality or use it to help you sleep, to change your vibration, or to give you a quick spurt of energy, but use it. Rejoice in the myriad ways of bringing meditation into your life.

There are a lot very good reasons for developing a meditation practice. You are likely to be healthy both physically and mentally. You’ll have less stress. You might gain some insight into the workings of your own mind. Your friends may find that you are easier to be around.

Then there are the spiritual goals. Some people use meditation as a form of prayer. For some it means learning to be in the moment, with the hope that this more natural and peaceful state of mind can be carried into everyday life and activities. Other find that meditation helps them to become more compassionate.

Whatever your reasons for meditating, it also can just be pleasurable and interesting. If you want to make it more pleasurable and more interesting, there are some things you can try. The following are just a few examples.

New Meditation Experiences

The first thing you might want to try is meditation CDs or other recordings that use brainwave entrainment technologies. These make meditating easy. Just put on your headphones and listen - that’s all it takes. You will be guided into an Alpha state or deeper without any effort.

Some of these recordings are designed strictly for meditation. They are often sold as sets, with each CD or MP3 download meant to take you into a deeper state of consciousness. Others are meant to take you in and out of deeper states on a sort of brainwave roller coaster ride. These might be more useful for stimulating creative thought, or for entertainment than for meditating.

One thing about this powerful technology that makes it very interesting, is that it does the work for you. Some will claim that you lose something if you replace regular meditation practices with brainwave entrainment, and this is a possibility. On the other hand, there is no reason you can’t do it both ways. The power of this technology (if you listen while laying down, you’ll probably fall asleep in minutes) means you can meditate in places and circumstances that are normally ruled out.

For example, you might not ordinarily think of meditating in the lunch room at your place of employment, or in a coffee shop. But with a meditation recording on an MP3 player, you can do this easily. Sit back and close your eyes and hit the play button. The others in the room will assume you are listening to music, and the recording will diminish the volume of all the distracting sounds in the room.

You can also take a walk while meditating. Just clip that MP3 player to your belt or drop it into your shirt pocket as I do, and put in the ear-buds. I like to walk the woods or along a beach while listening to a brainwave entrainment recording. You might try it on city streets as well. In fact, the small size and almost meaningless weight of MP3 players has opened up many interesting ways to practice meditation using brainwave technologies.
