Fighters at the top 10 level are the ones who you should be emulating in everyway when it comes to training. Often they don't disclose their methods outside of their camps, but their confident mindset is not automatically achieved without practice. A number of factors lead to their calmness that comes forward in each bout. We are going to talk about how meditation can lead you to that next level.


If you can sit down and take 10-15 minutes to picture how your fight is going to pan out twice a day during an 8-12 week training camp, you will be amazed by the results. You will have more faith and confidence in your abilities and be training on the road that leads to the picture that you've created in your mind.

Visualizing is proven for Olympic athletes to achieve the outcome they've set out for. It works for MMA fighters too. Many actually do it unconsciously.

Decrease Your Heart Rate.

Deep meditation can lower your heart rate, putting you in a state of pure calmness that can carry on throughout your day.

Decreasing your heart rate means that you're decreasing the need for high amounts of oxygen. The less O2 consumption during a fight can prevent the onset of fatigue.

Calm, Cool and Intimidating.

Stepping into the cage requires you to realize that there is another person in there that is going to attack you and try to knock you unconscious. People do get used to this feeling. Meditation can prepare you for it before you step in there, preventing the adrenalin rush that causes you to use up your energy stores in the first round of the fight.

The more calm you are, the more you look like a destroyer. Fighters like Fedor show a calmness that is almost disturbing to some of his opponents. His expressionless face makes him look like a robot built to beat opponents to the ground. This is what you want to work to.

The National Institutes of Health, through the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), has awarded $ 3,092,898 to the Helfgott Research Institute at the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) for two five-year complementary integrative health (CIH) research grants.

The new grants will provide funding for studies involving mindfulness-based stress reduction for people with multiple sclerosis; and clinical research training for naturopathic doctors and Chinese medicine practitioners, as well as training in naturopathic and Chinese medicine modalities for conventional medicine researchers.

Said NCNM President David J. Schleich about the new funding: “The School of Research & Graduate Studies at NCNM and our Helfgott Research Institute are growing at an unprecedented pace—because there is a need. With the increasing use of complementary and alternative medicine, high-quality rigorous research is essential so that CIH therapies can be accurately evaluated to help keep the public informed. We are honored to be able to partner with our esteemed colleagues at OHSU and UW on these important projects to grow this critical field of research.”

The K23 Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Multiple Sclerosis (Feasibility, Durability and Clinical Outcomes) program is being undertaken with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). The Building Research across Inter-Disciplinary Gaps (BRIDG)/ T90/R90 Clinical Research Training program in Complementary and Integrative Health is underway in collaboration with the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. The two NCNM research programs have been awarded a total of $ 672,550 and $ 2,420,348 respectively. NCNM and its Helfgott Research Institute have received eight NIH awards totaling $ 6,046,183 since 2002.

“The NCCIH awards are gratifying—not only because of the recognition from our federal government for the value of our research, but also for furthering our ability to help NCNM students develop the skills they need to contribute to the evidence-base of natural medicine,” Schleich said.


Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common neurological condition affecting young adults in the United States. MS symptoms are diverse and unpredictable, and include diminished mobility, chronic pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety and cognitive impairment. Studies have shown that psychological stress can exacerbate MS symptoms and trigger relapses.

While Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) clinical trials have demonstrated improved health conditions for many patient populations, few trials have been applied to people with neurological impairments. A recent study found that participation in a stress-reduction trial reduced the frequency of new lesion development in MS, suggesting that stress-management might not only improve symptoms, but may modify the disease progression.

The threefold aim of this program is to conduct research that will evaluate the feasibility of mindfulness-based stress reduction for people with multiple sclerosis; assess the durability of outcomes over a 12-month period; and understand which post-intervention activities and behaviors might support or inhibit sustainability.

NCNM researchers will introduce MBSR to study participants as an eight-week program consisting of weekly two-hour classes of meditation, breath work, yoga, self-reflection and awareness.


The primary goal of the BRIDG program is cross-training promising investigators to translate CIH (formerly known as complementary and alternative medicine) concepts into testable, multi-disciplinary research hypotheses; and to apply translational research methods to CIH-oriented research. Recognizing that research in CIH requires a multi-disciplinary approach, NCNM and UW have combined their expertise in research, clinical care and CIH to create an immersive clinical research training program that will foster collaboration and respect among a variety of medical and research disciplines.

The program integrates doctoral-level CIH healthcare providers (e.g., doctors of naturopathic, chiropractic, and acupuncture and Oriental medicine) and conventionally trained researchers from biomedical and public health disciplines (e.g., medical doctors, doctors of public health, PhDs, etc.).

The R90/NCNM component of the BRIDG program will train post-doctoral researchers who want to learn clinical research in a variety of CIH practices, including naturopathy, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, nutrition, and mind-body therapies. The T90/UW program component will train post-doctoral CIH clinicians in a variety of clinical research methods.

Rocking Motion
Rocking motion is the most difficult movement present in Tai Chi. In executing this movement you will have to shift the balance of your weight towards your frontal feet then downwards. Next, shift your weight backwards then towards the ground. Make sure that your body alignment remains perfect. In addition, you will have to shift your body weight using your mental concentration, not by brute force. Principles remain the same in all Tai Chi movements.

Bird Flaps Its Wings
In this movement you will have to position your palms while facing each other. However, make sure that your palms are not in contact with each other. Your hands should be taken sideways towards your waist. While doing this, make sure to simultaneously bend your knees as you lift your heels. Next, put your hands together and slightly reduce the bending of your knees. Repeat these movements for 3 times.

Around The Platter
In this movement you will have to position your arms towards your left torso, and then shift your body weight towards your right leg. Left leg should be position forward. Next, move your arms circularly. Make sure to execute these movements simultaneously. While your body is moving forward, half of the round should be completed. The remaining half should be perform after the weight is transferred back. Use the same exercise on the right torso. Make sure to perform this exercise 6-10 times for both sides of your torso.

Bass Drum
In this exercise your palms should face each other while, a distance of 12 inches in between should be maintain. Your hands should move as you shift your weight forward. This time, slowly position your arms upwards. In addition, your arms should be back to normal position as your weight shifts backwards. Repeat these steps for 6-9 times.

The techniques involve in Tai Chi doesn't require you to have bigger muscles. All you have to do is to concentrate on each movement and improve you mental visualization as you shift your weight in various angles.

Tai Chi walking is one of the most important aspects of Tai Chi practice. Unfortunately it is one of the aspects that most beginners do not spend enough time on.

Someone new to Tai Chi will look at the movement of the hands believing this is what makes the practice so beautiful and graceful. This is right, when you look at a Tai Chi performance it is the slow flowing movements that keep people in awe, but the movements of the hands and torso should be guided by the practitioners lower body and waist.

During practice the whole body must be connected and move together. To achieve this can be a long frustrating process especially if you are expected to learn this coordination strictly through form practice. If the training is broken down into different steps the learning process is easier because the student can understand the different aspects that make up the movements.

Different aspects of training that can be steps on the learning process include: stance training, shifting the weight, Tai Chi walking, single posture practice (where one posture is repeated either in a static stance or while walking), and various stretching and Qi Gong exercises. Of these Tai Chi walking is a part of every movement in the form.

Tai Chi walking teaches how to be in control of our body as we move. It is different from normal everyday walking and because of this requires training. To be in control we must first be aware both of what we are doing and also what we are trying to accomplish. What we are trying to accomplish is to have the body in balance so that we can relax as much as possible while channeling the force of gravity and weight down through our body and into the ground. Then shifting this force and weight from one foot to the other.

Taking a step requires that we are in control through the whole movement. This means that at no point in the step should we find ourselves falling. If we are falling we are no longer in control. To accomplish this the stepping foot is placed down on the ground with absolutely no weight. Only then is the weight shifted slowly onto the foot.

There are three ways to walk and each must be mastered: walking forward, walking sideways, and walking backwards. Once these are mastered then you can start to add the hand movements. The hand movements must be coordinated with the steps and body. Working on and mastering this coordination is always easier if you already have a good grasp of the walking.

If you are not walking correctly then the hand movements will never be coordinated with the rest of the body. This coordination is what makes Tai Chi what it is. Because of this Tai Chi walking is one of the most important aspects of practice and should not be overlooked.

Tai chi sword is said to be an advanced level of martial art training, which is hardly surprising considering how challenging tai chi itself can be. Although by adding the sword you are basically going through the same movements as in unarmed practice, you do need a subtle wrist and to be comfortable handling a sword. It is also something that should only be attempted after you have mastered some basic tai chi forms.

Great care should be taken when training, and be sure to use a practice sword at first so as not to harm yourself, or anyone else for that matter! There are different types of sword for practice, the wooden one being the most likely to be used by a beginner. There are even collapsible ones for ease of transport for people who travel regularly and like to continue their training.

Basically there are two types of tai chi sword, the broadsword or 'dao' which is a shorter one sided blade, and the chien or 'jian' which is a longer straight double edged blade; the chien being the one more commonly used in training. A chien would usually be around 36 - 40 inches (90 - 100 cms) long including the handle, the length and weight would vary according to the user.

The sword, known as the king of close combat martial art weapons, has been used in China for the last 2500 years, gradually evolving from crudely constructed bronze swords to the more sophisticated steel ones of today.

Looking back in history there is much to be admired about the 'eye to eye' close combat encounters in battle, which sets the sword apart as more honourable than longer range weapons. These days however, it is mainly used for ceremonial purposes, training for competition, or within a discipline for good health and longevity.

Adding the sword to your armoury of tai chi knowledge can make you become more appreciative of the martial art aspects of the past. It can make quite a difference to your training as well, as it becomes an extension of the body, allowing you to project even more chi from the body along the arm to the tip of the sword.
